Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Forces, Inquiry Hears

An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind classified equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to track down local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to move homes and change their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

Lawmakers are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a serious leak of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the UK to escape militant rule.

How the Leak Happened

A data file containing confidential details, including identities, contact details and in some cases household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak became known in late 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to Britain appeared on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

“There seems to be this misconception that Afghan rulers are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” she told the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have your phone number, they can trace you down to within metres. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower declared: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the investigation suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction regarding the incident was put in force in August 2023 and prevented any information regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with informed affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they relocate when possible and switched their contact details. These represented the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained these details, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The source argued that an official review performed by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the possession of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting the authorities; they live secretly. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

Person A described terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
