Despite Overwhelming Success, Expedition 33 Creators Plan to Keep Team Small

The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't just a strong GOTY candidate, it’s also a massive commercial success. Developer Sandfall Interactive along with publisher their publishing partner disclosed that the game exceeded five million copies in sales, this is despite it being a launch-day addition through the Game Pass service.

The game's performance was an unexpected turn to Sandfall. I firmly believed that we'd create an enjoyable experience that would meet moderate sales results,” the COO and producer explained.

A technical director remarked this title's review aggregate, which currently sits at 93, was the most surprising moment to the studio versus what we anticipated and the actual outcome proved to be. When the score released the entire team were cheering loudly. It felt absolutely wild.”

That success has led to the studio creating a free update for the title featuring fresh areas, enemies, plus epic encounters, which they said would be out within the “upcoming month[s]”.

However, despite the game's evolution, fans shouldn't anticipate the team will expand. Our team includes a talented crew guided by a visionary director who has a great vision for this game and future concepts. Our goal is to maintain the human scale that led to our success and perhaps create major titles sequentially,” they added.

The size of Sandfall drummed up plenty of debate upon the title's release. A few well-known creators, like Hideo Kojima, looked at the development group as the model for creative teams. Although the team is and was truly compact next to major studios, checking Expedition 33’s credits reveals many individuals were involved; the French studio contracted a Korean team to work on gameplay animations, as an instance.

“Some hiring will occur slightly more certainly when facing a future production surge in the coming years,” the executive stated. “Yet I picture rather a creative atelier of a few highly skilled individuals that create artistic collaborations.” They emphasized that their core belief as developers “is more to maintain the key advantages that led to this accomplishment from the start.”

Although it's premature for the studio to say specifically about future projects — rest assured, I tried to get them to — the developers understand their essential identity. “Turn-based gameplay, forms the foundation of what we built,” the lead programmer remarked. “The timing isn't right to specify what will interest us, yet we must to adhere to the DNA of studio through compelling worlds plus innovative play that inspires the team.”

The developer noted that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 began with the visionary pursuing his ideal project. And hopefully this approach will be repeated with upcoming games.”
