Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a message before the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to musical tuition.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
