Leeds Keep Liverpool at Arm's Length to Secure Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield
A pair of undefeated runs remained in place at Anfield, but only one team could take genuine satisfaction from the result. Leeds United executed a perfect game plan of stifling and containing the hosts, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering issues behind the current title holders' recent recovery.
Resolute Display Earns Vital Point
A lacklustre goalless draw, the first in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely attributable to the defensive solidity of the excellent defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, coupled with the home side's failure to unlock a compact Leeds unit. The Merseysiders were reduced to hopeful opportunities, and a sprinkling of boos could be heard around the famous ground at the full-time whistle on a laboured performance.
"If I don't utilise the whole group and we have a fixture list like this, I would never do this," the manager explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his past history was challenging. He is in red-hot form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to win over the emotion."
Liverpool's Frustration in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more energy and sharpness than in previous matches, with the right wing-back influential on the right side. Nevertheless, clear-cut chances were few and far between. The home side's best moments in the first period fell to forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a save from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The visitors' goalkeeper spilled the shot, needing a timely block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz tapping in the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted through onto a ball over the top but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; although not going down, his shouts for a penalty were dismissed.
Missed Chances Prove Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to find the target with his clearest chance. Connecting with a swift Frimpong cross in the goal area, the striker miscued a glance that struck the goalkeeper while facing an unguarded net.
At the other end, their most notable sight of goal came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a wayward clearance straight to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot back down the centre was gathered by the recovering Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy affair, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from suspension, forced a save from Perri from distance. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot made a triple change to bring urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to nodding his side in front from a set-piece, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his scoring run for the visitors in the closing minutes, but his finish was flagged out for a tight offside call. In the end, the two teams had to accept a share of the points.
