The Gunners' boss feels assured that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues after revealing that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been absent since the summer following an operation on his knee. Hoped to return earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Further fitness issues affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in central defence for the league leaders.

Questioned if increased squad depth was benefiting their title quest, his response was positive. “Absolutely, since the current term has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we want to compete at the top. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Commenting on the setback highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

He shared his eagerness to welcome him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, personally, I admire greatly for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
