The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a court battle that questioned her eligibility to hold the office.

Acceptance of Resignation

The nation's top law enforcement official, the Attorney General, announced Habba's resignation on Monday. Bondi stated that the judicial decision made it impossible for her to perform her duties.

"Let no one confuse following the order as giving up," she wrote. "The effort will now extend throughout the nation."

Judicial Challenge

Her resignation comes a week after a judicial panel found that she had been acting without proper authority as US attorney. This decision is expected to impact numerous criminal cases in the state.

The court ruled that a acting appointment that bypassed the advice and consent of the Senate breached the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

Future Role and Reaction

The Attorney General added that she will stay on at the justice department as a senior adviser. Habba plans to challenge the decision of the ruling, in the hope of achieving a overturned decision.

In a statement, Bondi argued that the judiciary "must not countermand the appointment of prosecutors responsible for performing the primary duty of the administration of prosecuting crime."

Record and Legacy

Bondi praised Habba's record and pointed out that during her run, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in crime. Additionally that the Camden experienced its first summer in half a century without a homicide.

Background and Previous Role

Habba, first joined Donald Trump's lawyers in 2021. She went on to acted for her client in his New York criminal case in the previous year, leading to his conviction on multiple felony counts of document fraud.

Prior to Habba took on the federal prosecutor position, Trump had stated he was appointing her as his senior adviser if re-elected, calling her as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a relentless legal advocate.
