The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
