The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Heated Debates Regarding Bots, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes several key adjustments:

  • Each team includes just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
  • Activities performed by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
  • Only two locations are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
  • Features like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.

So essentially, this mode lives up to its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides more options for players seeking different methods to have fun with the title. However, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.

Community Responses: Anger to Support

"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your rivals," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," and someone else details everything they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states a different comment. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Criticisms and Community Input

All that said, players have valid points to criticize the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.

Lastly, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"

Future Prospects: Adjustments Occur?

Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
