The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
