The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
