"When are you speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often show them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"And thus all are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international following.

But the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
