A extensive search and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing sailing vessels carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search Operations Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of 9 crew members, as stated by a military release.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"The group is collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, baby formula, cycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to certain proposals, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
