A 60-day voyage circling Australia has been cancelled days after the tragic passing of an senior female passenger who was abandoned by the ship on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but broke off from the excursion for a pause. The liner sailed away leaving her and returned several hours later after the crew realised the passenger was missing.

A large-scale search operation discovered her body the next day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, in coordination with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and crew on the vessel were told that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".
