Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
